The energetic crossroads of Yule and Christmas

As the wheel of the year turns towards Yule in the Northern Hemisphere, we find ourselves at a peculiar crossroads. The days are short, the nights are long, and nature itself seems to whisper, "Rest". It’s the season of stillness, of quiet reflection, and yet… our social calendars tell a very different story.
Suddenly, we’re being pulled in all directions: parties, gift exchanges, family gatherings, and endless to-do lists. It’s an ironic twist, isn’t it? Just as our energy reserves are naturally waning, the demands on our time and attention are ramping up.
This contrast can feel overwhelming, even disorienting. Winter’s invitation is to turn inward, to cocoon, to let the cold and dark guide us into a period of rest and introspection. But instead, we’re expected to be out there, brimming with holiday cheer, decking halls, and making merry. It’s no wonder so many of us feel drained, a little frazzled, or even downright burned out by the time the new year rolls around.
Perhaps it’s worth pausing to ask: What would happen if we allowed ourselves to follow the natural rhythm of this season? What if we leaned into the quiet, even as the world around us turns up the volume?

Now, flip the globe and let’s talk about the Southern Hemisphere, where Christmas falls during the height of Summer. It’s a completely different story: long days, warm nights, and nature bursting with life. The energy of this season is outward and expansive, perfectly aligned with the social buzz of the holidays. Down there, Christmas and Summer feel like kindred spirits. Barbecues on the beach, outdoor festivities, and sunshine-filled celebrations - the season naturally supports the exuberance of this time.
It’s a beautiful synchronicity, one that makes me a little envious if I’m honest. They’re lucky, aren’t they? Their holidays align with the earth’s energetic pulse, making it easier to embrace the joy and movement of the season without feeling out of sync.
For those of us in the North, though, this 'misalignment' can be a gentle reminder to check in with ourselves. Yes, the invitations and obligations will keep coming, and there’s a certain magic to participating in the festive spirit. But let’s not forget to honour what our bodies and souls are craving: rest, stillness, and a chance to turn inward. Maybe that means saying no to a few events, carving out quiet evenings at home, or even creating our own small rituals to honour the season’s energy.
Yule is a time to embrace the dark, not fear it. It’s a time to light our inner candles, knowing that even in the coldest, darkest moments, the promise of light and renewal is just around the corner. So as you navigate this busy season, remember to also listen to your inner rhythms. Let the energy of the earth guide you, whether it’s calling you to rest or revel.
And if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, soak up that sunshine and revel for us all!

How are you feeling at this time of year? Do you find yourself craving rest, or are you energised by the holiday buzz? And how are you planning to celebrate Christmas this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts and traditions, share them in the comments below!
