Selenite, a pearly-white form of gypsum (calcium sulfate mineral), is one of the most common crystals, found on every continent and in nearly every country in the world. Countries with some of the most abundant resources for Selenite are Morocco, Mexico, Australia, Madagascar, Brazil, and the US.

While the name Selenite technically applies to the clear crystals, 'Satin Spar' Gypsum (which is non-transparent white and striated) is also a form of Selenite. This often causes for a lot of confusion, and some people are claiming that the non-transparent version is fake or mislabeled as Selenite. Both have the same properties, so both the clear Selenite and Satin Spar are Selenite.

Because of its sheen resembling the light of the Full Moon, the crystal is named after Selene, the Greek Goddess of the Full Moon. As the Moon purifies energy, so does Selenite. Although colourless, the parallel striations that run the length of this crystal often give it a whitish appearance and even in the clear version of Selenite, the striations often causes it to be slightly opaque.

It forms natural wands, but may also be easily carved or etched. Selenite can be damaged by water, so please don’t cleanse it in water or use it in an elixir. Small pieces may also come off in needle-like slivers, so handle it carefully.
